SMART Program

The SMART Program, which is under contract with the Travis County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, is a substance abuse treatment program that provides residential treatment and continuing care services to offenders with substance abuse offenses or a history of chemical dependency. The program includes a SMART Reentry Court led by the Honorable Mike Lynch, 197th District Court Judge. In addition, SMART includes the following essential components that research has shown to be necessary for success:

  • Continuing care
  • Intensive attention to anti-social thinking for high-risk/case-control and limit-setting offenders
  • A family program that is designed to assist family members to learn cognitive and pro-social thinking skills

SMART is viewed as one of the most restrictive programs for offenders, often imposed as a last resort prior to incarceration. All offenders entering the program are under court order to attend for five months.

It is the belief at SMART that individuals benefit from receiving treatment in a corrections setting. The chances for success are increased when residential treatment is followed by an intensive community based continuing care component in order to maintain recovery.

Paladin currently houses 100 residents at SMART under the current contract. With the new expansion – to be completed in October 2011 – the entire facility will hold 148 beds.
